“This is not the way home. This is never the way home!”
Folklore of a Tree Troll has always been whispered about in Misty Peaks. But now Hudson must decide if he believes it or not. Should he take the shortcut through Wasted Wood or should he go around and guarantee he'll be grounded.
Wasted Wood edition by Brock Eastman Children eBooks
I have always loved novelettes. They're quick reads typically, but often have more plot and character than a short story might. Being that I love a good scary story every now and then, I quickly picked up WASTED WOOD. Brock Eastman has crafted a simple, yet engaging tale that I couldn't put down until I reached the last page.Hudson is your typical kid -- he just wants to play video games, ride bikes, and hang out with his friends. But when he realizes he's not going to make it home in time, he decides to take the shortcut through Wasted Wood. Creepy things have happened in the woods -- kids have disappeared, a strange old man lives out there by himself, and there are even legends of a monster roaming between the trees at night -- but Hudson doesn't care. He just needs to get home. And as soon as he turns his bike down the trail leading into the woods, a dark adventure begins that will force Hudson to learn what obedience and friendship are really all about.
The story here is pretty engaging. I wasn't able to stop reading until I'd finished the book, and I will say that there are definitely a few moments that will be somewhat creepy for younger readers. The book had an "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" vibe -- but without the cheeky nineties humor. Hudson is an interesting lead character and is dealing with parents, golden brothers, and tense friendships -- all great ingredients for a story.
The only trouble I had with the book was the actual writing. Some typos are here and there, but I also had to re-read a few of the sentences to truly grasp what was happening. Some awkward phrasing, rhyming words, and repeated words were scattered throughout the writing, and it pulled me out of the story a few times.
Otherwise, this is a great little story for younger readers to devour and find a creepy story with some great action sequences. WASTED WOOD is sure to please readers looking for a GOOSEBUMPS-esque story.

I loved this short story. It was a easy and gripping read. I read it all in one sitting and when I gave it to my son it was hard to make him stop and go to bed. As a mum I liked the message that choices we make can have consequences we don't foresee and that maybe computer games are not the be all and end all to life. Another great from Brock Eastman - keep them coming!
I found it a nice read but it's too scary for my kids.
Make sure you have plenty of time on your hands when you start reading this book, because you won't put it down until you have finished reading it! IT'S THAT GOOD! I found myself breathless, waiting to see what happens to Hudson and his friends. You won't want to miss out on this thrilling adventure!!
What a great addition to any classroom, teaching students (or your own children) the importance of obedience. Sometimes, we don't always know why our parents give us limitations, but it's always for our good. Hudson found this out the hard way. Also, the importance of friendship is stressed in this book. It is so important who your friends are. .. .. it makes ALL the difference!
Buy your copy today and while you're at it, buy one for your friends! )
I would totally recommend this to one of my friends! I don't want to be cliché or anything, but Wasted Wood literally keeps you at the edge of your seat! Not only that, but it also has a great life lesson intertwined through the story! The AWESOME description paints a vivid picture in your mind! Also there's a hint of humor here and there that makes you chuckle a bit. Like all of his other books that I've read, I honestly don't think Brock Eastman could've written this book any better than he has! I loved it!!!
I love this book. It gives a good lesson, but I do not really care for the tree troll, called Dark Wood Demon. Other than that it was great! I usually do not read but this guy's book is really good.
